This easy ride from San Bruno BART station to San Mateo stays mostly out of car traffic as it meanders along the San Andreas fault, with panoramic views of Crystal Springs Reservoir. The initial 6-mile climb is rewarded by a languid 8-mile descent along San Andreas Trail and Sawyer Camp Trail.
These well-paved bike and pedestrian roads can get crowded on the weekends but have very low traffic on weekdays. You will find the journey relatively smooth, but you will also notice scars on the road from the horizontal tectonic activity.
The end destination is Himawari (202 2nd Ave), a Japanese restaurant that pre-dates the newer Ramen joints in town. Their Tonkotsu ramen has been my favorite so far, but if you like a little more kick to your ramen, opt for the Szuechuan-inspired Tan Tan noodles (below). And for an elegant side, the Agedashi Dofu (pictured above).
START San Bruno Bart Station. Exit and turn LEFT (NORTH) onto Huntington Ave. Follow Huntington Ave as it curves LEFT into Sneath Ln.
Continue on Sneath Ln for 1.2 miles. It’s a steady, then a steep, climb until you pass Rollingwood Dr. There is also a brief section of shared path with cars. Don’t worry, it ends soon!
In another 0.7 miles on Sneath Ln, LEFT at the signal onto CA-35.
Stay on the shoulder for 0.5 miles. San Andreas Trail entrance will be on your RIGHT.
In 2 miles, the trail for bicycles ends. Follow the bike signs and cross the street to continue onto the sidewalk of CA-35 for 0.6 miles until you see the entrance for Sawyer Camp Trail on your RIGHT (Hillcrest Blvd will be on your LEFT).
In 0.9 miles, you will cross a bridge and see a fork. STAY LEFT to continue on Sawyer Camp Trail.
Follow the trail for another 5.1 miles. The road may seem like it is descending for a very long time, but have no fear! Your climbing earlier paid off. From here to San Mateo is a long and slow descent.
When the trail ends, exit the park onto Crystal Springs Rd.
In 0.9 miles, LEFT at the T intersection (at Polhemus Rd) to stay on Crystal Springs Rd.
In 2.2 miles, SLIGHT RIGHT onto W 3rd Ave. In 0.6 miles, LEFT onto S Ellsworth Ave. FIRST RIGHT onto 2nd Ave.
